Winter Wellness Herbs

Many herbs have special benefits for keeping us well and protected from viruses and bacteria that cause infectious disease.

Autumn is the prime time for these invaders to make their mark and taking a regular herbal tincture tonic now – often only one teaspoon a day – can be a good way to make sure you stay happy and healthy while everyone around you is coughing, sneezing and getting sick!

These are some of the herbs featured in our Winter Wellness tonics

  1. Wild Thyme: a magnificent antimicrobial herb that was always held in the Sick Room in medieval times. The aroma of thyme comes from thymol – an antiseptic, antioxidant, antibacterial and antifungal monoterpene, known for its ability to disrupt microbial cell membranes. Lab studies have shown that thymol exhibits antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses, probably by hindering viral replication or disrupting the viral envelope. We in the Wakatipu basin have amazingly potent wild thyme which has been foraged specifically for GYH&H tinctures.
  2. Echinacea: a wonderful herb originating from the North American continent (but grown in NZ) and so famous for its ability to counteract viral and bacterial infections. Some studies indicate that its daily prophylactic use can reduce the number of common-cold episodes and sick days. Research also indicates that echinacea may reduce the need for antibiotics in respiratory tract infections, by limiting the progression of viral inflammation to secondary bacterial complications.
  3. Elderberry – another fantastic herb that can be foraged in our region thanks to the Early Settlers who brought elder trees with them from Europe and England – exactly for the reason that we can use them now – to help chase away winter ills and chills. Clinical studies indicate that elderberry can shorten the duration of cold and flu symptoms by utilising anthocyanins to block viral attachment to host cells, inhibiting replication, and stimulating immune responses.
  4. Astragalus: known in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as Huang Qi, is said to strengthen the body’s protective energy, or “wei qi,” which aligns closely with the modern concept of the innate immune system. It increases resistance to external pathogens, such as bacteria and viruses, and enhances overall immune function.
